Some days I envy children. The way they pick up a crayon, hold it boldly, draw without hesitation and make a mess from which emerges powerful shapes.
I wanted to feel like a kid again and not to worry about making the most finished, perfectly detailed and strongly composited painting. A Nooitgedacht Pony seemed like a perfect subject! It's a fairly new breed whose name means "never thought" in English (or so I'd translate it with my lacking Dutch skills as I am too damn lazy to Google the real translation). It is said the breed is "better than you can imagine" so, the name of this fairly odd piece should be self-evident.
A bit of over-working, but I kind of like this. Even thought about hanging it which I never do with my own paintings!
Oil on canvas, 22x27 cm. Better photo might be coming when it dries & I get that canvas stretched better (it's a bit saggy now).
you achieved the look you wanted, i think. it's a simple piece, but keeps the viewer looking at all the little marks for quite awhile

Ihan huijausta! Minäkin teen jonkun tämmösen mistä ei tunnista edes rotua kunnolla, kun tommosen kakkarodun valitsit... D; Sinällään hauska työ, mut ihan huijausta AC:n suhteen!

I really like the lines, no unnecessary detail, the head is especially nice. I have a question - are your canvases shop-bought or home-made? How do you stretch them because I have yet to really work it out for myself lol... I only use shop-bought ones (not creative enough to make my own) and I don't normally come across the problem of sagging canvas, but I did recently have one that had lost its tightness by the time I'd finished painting it. I don't understand this whole stretching thing, I just look at the frame and the little wooden stretcher things that come with it and it makes no sense to me.

My canvases are store-bought. I have yet to convince my dad to make frames for me. (I know they can be bought individually too, but it isn't really worth it out here with all the hassle.) This particular one was an old one and it somehow started to sag when I painted on it.
I'm going to use the little wooden things (wedges?) to get it tight again. My method is just to stick them into the little slots every which way they go (narrow end first) and then just pushing or gently hammering them deeper until the canvas is tight again. Usually I first check which direction the canvas has loosened and then wedge the frame either horizontally or vertically. A little bit at a time, from both sides if the sag is significant. If stretching the canvas just in one direction doesn't work out, then I try stretching it the other way until it is tight. Not very scientific, I admit, but hey, it works! I know sometimes you have to remove the canvas and staple the whole thing again, but luckily I haven't had to do it yet myself.

Sitä paitsi mulla oli hieno Nooitgedacht-stoorikin! :ylpis:
Well I'll have to try that next time. Thanks I know I tried pushing the little wooden thingies into the slots before but they didn't seem to fit. Maybe because it was a cheap canvas I tried it on.
