100:43. Don't Come by helekri 100:43. Don't Come by helekri
This took some weird u-turn but I think I still like this.
(np. Erase-Rewind by Cardigans, how appropriate)
As some of you might know, this started out as an advertisement (look my scraps, if interested) but given the tight dead-line of the project, I was quite unhappy about the way I had to leave the painting.

So I wanted to work more on it. This is the result. Granted, I could have refined it more.
However, it wasn't my intention to make this piece photorealistic or completely "polished". I'm grown quite sick of the photorealistic style, it's no challenge if you've got refs and usually it takes away your own "voice". As a result, this time I intented on creating a good atmosphere, to paint a moment, an emotion. Be rough and expressive without losing beauty. I think I did fairly well.

No references used for anything. It might be quirky or cartoony, I don't care. It makes me feel and that's more than I could've hoped to achieve.

Also, part of my 100 theme challenge, theme #43, dying.
(Somehow this makes me see a story where the horse is saying goodbye and then walking off into the mist, never returning. "Take my life to save hers" type of situation also possible. On some level this is a familiar metaphor/image.)

-------------------------------------------

Unlike my other paintings, this one uses textures as a basis for the bg — so not a "pure" painting!

Well done. I especially like how the colours of the background reflect on the colouring of the horse. You also did a wonderful job in bringing the mood to life! *thumbs up, ass to faves*

This reminds me so much of my mare. She gives me that look all the time.

beautiful! I knw what you mean about photorealism. It takes an incredible amount of talent, to achieve it, but often the person behind the picture gets lost, as though in putting in all the detail and getting the colours and shading absolutely right, the artist forgot to put something of himself in it.
I think it is beautiful and not in any way cartoony.

I see that you finally managed to decide what colours to use - something in the middle :giggle:
and as a piece of "catching the moment" is so wonderful! :boogie: the atmosphere there is so swift and hard to catch that you feel so far from the horse - great effect! :aww:

bloody gorgeous. I love the warm golden tones. I can totally see your saying goodbye image in this too. aside from all that, I also love the horse herself (looks like a she to me, dunno if she is) she looks haflinger-like, if not for the colour. I love the shapes, her face and the thick mane. lovely image :)

Haha, weren't we talking about replying late some time ago...? :D
Yes, it's a "she". Or at least that's how I thought about whilst painting. Ok, most of my equines tend to be mares for some reason.
Thank you for the comment. :)

that's weird, most of mine end up being male. I never really consciously make a decision and they just end up looking male-like. Only the last drawing I did, I actually decided would be a mare.
No problem :) late replies are in fashion these days XD

This was on the Vippos commercial? ;)

Nice pic anyway, btw. how you do your watermark?

Vippos ad had a version of this, yes.
The watermark is a few lines of text written in dark red on a white background turned into a pattern. Then on a new layer I apply pattern fill, delete the "blocks of text" that don't fit fully on the pic. Center the remaining blocks, apply a good layer style (linear light's usually a good bet, so is multiply: sometimes I invert the colours of the layer or remove the white bg), fiddle with the opacity control and ta-dah!

Thanks ^^. I'll try that when I get around photoshopping pics again... I've been looking for a good watermark system for photos, but I haven't found one that would work on photos or be simple enough that I get it to work on photos ^^;
